| Pageantology.net Year End Special 2012 VOTE FOR THE TOP PAGEANT HEADLINE OF 2012 (see poll above)Voting period is from December 26, 2012 until January 4, 2013The top headlines of 2012 APRIL 2012: A rule change that would allow transgender women to participate in the Miss Universe beauty pageant next year is a step forward for equality, advocates said Tuesday after pageant officials announced the policy shift.
Pageant officials said they are working on the language of the official rule policy change but expected final word to come soon. The rules will have to be approved by Donald Trump, who runs the Miss Universe Organization, and NBC. Trump and NBC co-own the contest.
The announcement of the policy change comes a week after the organization decided to allow Jenna Talackova to compete for Canada's spot in the Miss Universe pageant this year.
Talackova, a Vancouver resident, underwent a sex change four years ago after being born a male. The advocacy group GLAAD called on the Miss Universe Organization to review her case, as well as open the competition to transgender women, after she was disqualified from competing in the Miss Universe Canada contest next month.MAY 2012: Former Miss Universe Venezuela, Eva Ekvall has died from breast cancer aged just 28.
The mother-of-one died on Saturday in a Houston, Texas hospital after a two year struggle with the disease, her family said.
Famous in her teenage years for her beauty, Ms Ekvall went on to become a news anchor, author and one of her home country's greatest cancer charity advocates.AUGUST 2012: Yu Wenxia, 23, beat babes from 115 other countries to claim the annual prize.
Last year's champ, Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela, handed over her crown at a glamorous ceremony at Dongsheng Stadium in Ordos, a mining city on the edge of the Gobi desert.
There was good news for Brits too - as 19-year-old Miss Wales Sophie Moulds was the runner-up. Australia's Jessica Kahawaty, 23, came third.NOVEMBER 2012: Miss Japan Ikumi Yoshimatsu bested 68 lovely ladies from all over the globe in the 52nd edition of Miss International to get the night's most coveted crown. It was a proud moment for her as she was crowned in front of her countrymen being the first Japanese to wear the Mikimoto crown.NOVEMBER 2012: Tereza Fajksová of the Czech Republic was named Miss Earth 2012 at the coronation night held Saturday night at the Versailles Palace.
The Philippines' Stephany Stefanowitz was named Miss Air (1st runner-up); Venezuela's Osmariel Villalobos, Miss Water (2nd runner-up); and Brazil's Camila Brant, Miss Fire (3rd runner-up).DECEMBER 2012: Ms. Lorraine Schuck, Executive Vice President of Carousel Productions, Inc. (Founder and Organizer of MISS EARTH beauty pageant) strongly and categorically denies the contents of the news release by a Russian newspaper in YouTube reporting allegations in the Russian press that she agreed, to fix the results of MISS EARTH for a sum of money.
Ms. Schuck does not deny that the interview with said journalists took place in her office last year. But it is very clear that her statements were not only taken out of context but were deliberately and maliciously twisted to make it appear that she had agreed, or even hinted, that the results of MISS EARTH could be fixed for the mentioned amount of US$4 million or any other amount. In fact, as can be heard in the audio of said interview, Ms. Schuck insisted on the integrity of MISS EARTH saying that not only does it choose Judges of proven character and integrity but that the results of the voting are tabulated by the international firm of Ernst & Young. She stands by the record and reputation of MISS EARTH and the integrity of its selection process. All the distinguished individuals who have participated as a Judge of MISS EARTH at one time or another and all the MISS EARTH National Organizers can attest to this.DECEMBER 2012: Twenty-year-old Olivia Culpo, Miss USA won the Miss Universe 2012 title Wednesday night at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip, replacing outgoing champion Leila Lopes of Angola.
The Boston University sophomore’s coronation ends a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. An American had not won the Miss Universe title since Brook Lee won in 1997.
