	Miss Earth SA Ashanti Mbanga visited the residents of the Epilepsy SA centre in Geduld on Friday, to plant two trees. Ashanti was accompanied by Ella Bella, the ambassador of Miss Earth SA, who assists her with the publicity of Miss Earth. “I am here to bring awareness on environmental issues. A lesson I have learned from Sappi, who has a good relationship with Epilepsy SA, is trees are the lungs of the earth,” she said. She added building relationships, like the one between Sappi and the centre, are a working network to help build the environment. Although Sappi’s employee wellness committee visits the centre on a regular basis, Friday’s visit was different. Other staff members from Sappi and their general manager Matt Spence accompanied them to support Ashanti in the planting of the trees in aid of Arbour Day. “Trees have many uses such as providing paper, furniture and many more,” says Matt. The two trees were planted to give much needed shade for the residents next to the swimming pool. More

She bested 16 other girls for the crown at the conclusion of the 3rd annual event. Katja won over the jury by her beauty and her answer during the interview round which is about health care. Projects such as Child Rehabilitation Initiative and mangrove reforestation program of Yuu`n Mee company will be Katja and her elemental court's focus during their one year in service. More

	The grand finale of the Miss Earth Nigeria 2013 took place, Sunday September 22, at the Oriental Hotel, with Marie Miller beating 23 other contestants to emerge winner of the competition. The 25-year-old model and video vixen who walked away with a brand new 2013 Toyota Avensis and a N3 million one year salary, will be representing Nigeria at the Miss Earth pageant scheduled to hold later this year. 	She's been hunting for badger setts and clearing up litter in the Belfast Hills all summer. It's a far cry from the glamour of the Miss Earth competition finals in the Philippines, where Amira Graham will represent Northern Ireland. The 19-year-old Belfast student is in her second year studying law at Trinity College Dublin and hopes to specialise in environmental law after graduating – promoting renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. Now that Amira has been named Miss Earth Northern Ireland, she has pledged to raise awareness for Belfast Hills Partnership and encourage the community to get involved. "Throughout the year we hold river clean-ups and wildlife and badger surveys," she said. "The reason we need to know where the badger setts are is so that we can monitor, assess change and also prevent wildlife crime, such as badger baiting. This is where a badger is dug out of its sett and used to fight dogs for sport." More

	Vandia Sands is the new Miss Earth Bahamas 2013 & will compete in Miss Earth 2013. Miss Sands was a contestant in Miss Universe Bahamas 2013 placing 3rd in the Preliminary Swimsuit Contest and 2nd in the Preliminary Evening Gown Contest It was stated at the end of the show that originally 9 girls entered, but due to the fact that pageant director, Gaynelle Rolle now lives in Abaco, video's were submitted and they chose the top 2 that way. The girls were shown in Swimsuits, Evening Gown & Costume and then they were crowned at the end of the show. Debora was born Venice 21 years ago and expects to finish her degree in Nursing from Università di Padova next spring. Aside from physical beauty, the jury also evaluate candidates based on an environmental project that in the event of winning, will champion during her reign, what are your plans? A journal on environment and sustainability for children hospitalized in pediatric wards. The goal is first and foremost distract them from their illness and involve them in fun and educational projects to sensitize them on issues about the environment and then workshops and games to develop their environmental consciousness. At the national competition, the jury also evaluated the candidates based on an interview about environmental issues, what did they asked you? I talked in general about what I think on the environment and the fact that as a child I was brought up to respect nature. I then presented the jury an article about large ships arriving in Venice. I explained to them the negative effects to the environment like noise pollution, environmental pollution and the destructive waves it causes. I also gave them the Costa Concordia tragedy that happened in San Marco as an example. If another human error will occur on these ships, it will not only be a human catastrophe but also environmental and cultural. Is Miss Earth brand making its way to Italy or is it still a marginal event? It is still not known to us. In contrast in overseas it is one of the most famous beauty contest. I do not know why...probably we remain less sensitive to environmental issues and we tend to let things pass us by. 	After touring the world as an “eco-ambassador,” Miss Earth 2012 Tereza Fajksova, is back in the Philippines, where the international beauty pageant is based. After visiting the Manila Times office yesterday for a roundtable, Fajksova said, “I am so happy to be back here. I call it my second home because I have never been to other countries for two months. I was here for two months (when I won last year), and I will be here for two months again.” Fajksova of Czech Republic just returned from South Africa. Before that she toured countries like Finland, Sri Lanka, Ghana, South Sudan, Indonesia and Mauritius. “All year, I have been going to different countries and speaking to people about the environment,” Fajksova said. “But then, it has also become a bit political since I also talked to the governments of the countries about what they can do for their environment.” Fajksova noted that though she spoke to a lot of adults as eco-ambassador, as it is the children that she wanted to influence most.“I always talk to children from the public schools because I want to educate them while they are young,” she said. The Manila Times asked Fajksova what her most memorable country and experience were so far. “I have learned something different from every country. 	THE phrase “dumb blonde” has given, well, blondes such a bad rep that it’s almost a cultural response to regard them with superficial admiration. When you’re blonde and beautiful, it’s almost universally assumed that you are the recipient of God’s aesthetic blessings but little else. Especially if you’re a woman—and even more if you’ve won a beauty pageant. But Tereza Fajksovà doesn’t fit the stereotype and refuses to boxed into the same. Look beyond her stunning looks and her daunting height, and one easily recognizes that quality about her that puts one at ease. Perhaps it’s the way her eyes seem focused in conversation, or her overall demeanor without the slightest hint of haughtiness or arrogance despite being crowned Miss Earth 2012. When she speaks, one is drawn to listen, in the same manner that she listens with utmost sincerity. And it’s not entirely her beauty that compels one to lend an ear. Tereza gives off the feeling that there’s so much more going on inside her head, beyond just giving one makeup tips. “Our advocacy involves the environment,” Tereza explains when asked what the difference is between Miss Earth and all the other prominent global beauty pageants. In not so many words, her answer hits home: We’re not just here to look beautiful—we’re here to change the world. Except it doesn’t just stop at curbing pollution or finding out ways to lessen flooding, or how to plan ahead for the occurrence of natural disasters. The most important advocacy for Tereza is this: She wants to teach children because she believes they are the future. That if they are given the right amount of education, they will be the ones to make the world a better place. Of course, some people might think of this as such a “beauty queen” quote. But for those who have actually experienced what it’s like to teach a bunch of kids (just ask college students going through the required Literacy Training Service program), it’s not an easy task. Kids are rowdy and have short attention spans, often distracted by thoughts of play rather than science or math. And it takes a lot to get them to listen for five minutes, more so for a whole afternoon. But Tereza talks about teaching them with a passion, and the spark of enjoyment in her eyes in doing so is evident. It’s like she’s a kid herself, possessed of a boundless energy for a belief she holds true. More

	Czech blonde beauty Tereza Fajksova, arguably the most beautiful Miss Earth winner ever, has returned to the country to lead the launching of the Learn, See and Do environmental project. Since her crowning as Miss Earth 2012 in December, the stunning, 24-year-old, public administration graduate and model, has been doing a wonderful job fulfilling her duty as spokesperson of the Manila-based Miss Earth Foundation, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental organizations to promote worthy projects and increase awareness on environmental issues and concerns around the world. The Learn, See and Do project hopes to convince and influence governments around the world to make environmental studies compulsory in early education. “If children learn about the environment from an early age, they are more likely to continue this behavior in their adult years,” says the stunning Miss Earth. Tereza graced the International Youth Green Summit (IYGS) 2013 in Indonesia where she spoke on the theme “Changing the World through Green Action” and the initiatives she has been doing as Miss Earth. In Finland, she spoke at an Environmental Workshops and Program and visited an elementary school to talk the school children about her job as Miss Earth and the importance of saving the planet. Here’s a snippet of the interview: Your reign as Miss Earth is about to end, what was the most rewarding experience as Miss Earth? Traveling the world was a learning experience, seeing different cultures, speaking with the government about the environment and getting some respect, it was just amazing and I am so thankful for. Do you think that in your one year as Miss Earth, you were able to make a difference in helping address environmental issues? I did my best to be true to my title. I spoke with different states and tell them to do this. They have the power to do the rules and decisions and they tell you they will do it. You come from a beautiful country, what’s the biggest problem facing the environment in the Czech Republic? In Europe, we do care about our environment and we don’t have too much pollution unlike in Asia and Africa. But our problem is the frustrations. Economy has grown so fast. I tell them not to touch the trees, but when they do, they should plant new ones. Climate change is the biggest problem in Asia and Africa. You build so fast so quick destroying the trees, which starts global warming and floods. Just one tree can hold gallons of water. What do you think of other international beauty pageants as compared to Miss Earth? First of all, all beauty pageants, which do everything for charity, I say they are doing a great job helping children, in general, and other people, especially, Miss Earth with its main advocacy on the environment. I am happy to be part of the speaking community and I just hope that the people will support us. What would you wish your successor? I wish her lots of luck and lots of patience. Wear the crown with humility and full responsibility. You know, I had experience seeing garbage thrown in the streets and rivers by people who do not care. I just showed them right way, step by step. When I was in a country in Africa, we went to the streets together with the minister and 100 policemen and tell the people what to do and they listened. I hope that when I come back, their surrounding will be clean. If you were not Miss Earth, what would you have been? Maybe, I am a professional volleyball player. Anyway, I believe in destiny. I played professional volleyball five years ago, and I injured my arm. We were so sad but then I accepted it because what happened to me was my destiny. You have to believe in your destiny. I would not be here wearing this crown as Miss Earth. More

Yuselmi Cristal Silva, a 21 year old Administration student revealed her dreams, aspirations and hopes for the future after being crowned Miss Earth México 2013. Cristal, as she refers to be called, started modeling at the age of 16. Earlier this year, with the support of her parents, she entered Nuestra Belleza Tamaulipas - a preliminary for the most prestigious national pageant, Nuestra Belleza Mexico which sends the winners to Miss Universe and Miss World. She was a big favorite to win the state crown but on the coronation night, she ended as a runner up. What many people thought that her chance to compete internationally ended, Cristal took this experience as an opportunity to redirect her path. Thanks to her fans, those who knew her heard about Miss Earth contest. Here's a snippet of her interview: What is the difference between Miss Earth with other beauty pageants? It's very different cause you are not only judged physical beauty but also your commitment for the betterment of the environment. What does it mean for you to represent Mexico in this contest? Two things, first it is a big responsibility because it is really a commitment to carry the name Mexico in an international competition and second its a great honor because you represent not only the culture and tradition but also the beauty of Mexican women. I am proud that I came from Ciudad Victoria and I am proud I am from Tamaulipas. What is the difference when it comes to your preparations for this contest compared to others you entered? I have much bigger responsibilities because it is not enough just to look pretty. It is a year of working for the environment and creating awareness which means a lot because I get to contribute for the cause. How do you prepare for the up coming international contest? Diet, fitness routine, familiarizing myself to our country's culture and working on my environmental project which aims to protect the rivers of Tamaulipas. The Hungarian pageant organizers originally don't want to send her cause she is not a national titleholder but due to a specific request of Miss Earth organizers to find a delegate that have the qualities they are looking for, Dalma is chosen. I'm studying International Relations, I can speak French and English. My greatest achievement is working with UNICEF. 	On August 24th, 2013, 21 year old Miss Amber Reneé Rivero was crowned with the official title of Miss Earth Belize; and, on this coming Saturday, November 9th, Amber will depart the country for the first leg of her journey as the formal Environmental Ambassador of Belize. En route to Manila, Philippines, Miss Rivero leaves Belize and heads to Miami, Florida, for a few days where she will undergo final training for the pageant. The journey continues on the 14th of November when she leaves Miami for Manila. Upon arriving in the Philippines, Miss Rivero will participate in a number of preliminary competitions before the date of the actual pageant, which includes a swimsuit and a costume competition. In lieu of the actual Miss Earth International theme “International Year of Water Cooperation”, Miss Rivero will model a costume depicting one of the greatest features of the Earth, The Belize Blue Hole. Furthermore, for the first time, this year Belize will take part in the Miss Earth International Talent Competition. 	Miss Earth South Africa, 24 year old Ashanti Mbanga, will be heading off to represent South Africa at Miss Earth International which will take place in Manila in December. Ashanti is a Transport Economics Major and is excited to share her passion and views on environmental activism with the world at this year’s Miss Earth Competition. This year’s international Miss Earth theme will follow the official United Nations theme of Water Cooperation and Ashanti is ready to share with her fellow delegates South Africa’s vision for access to clean water for our nation. Ashanti will be representing South Africa against delegates from all over the world and she will also be travelling around Manila to visit schools, communities as well as dignitaries to share her passion for environmental preservation and improvement. The key focus will be on water co-operation and what each Ambassador can do to continue promoting the responsible use of this scarce natural resource when they return home. 	Before flying to the Philippines, Monika Leová showcased her wardrobe that she'll be bringing to the pageant. At the world finals, she will meet again with the reigning Miss Earth and her predecessor Tereza Fajksová. Monika will be wearing four pairs of long and short evening cocktail dresses in the duration of her stay in the Philippines. On the grand event, she will wear a bright red tulle dress with satin pipping, satin coated round buttons and a wide skirt. "I'm excited for my grand finale evening dress. It is simple yet it has intricate details that are not quite obvious in first glance. We decided to have it in red because the color stands out very well and its my favorite color," said Monika. She is already on her way to the Philippines and will arrive on November 14th for the world final of Miss Earth 2013 to be held on December 7th. "EVA fits very well to the main concerns of Miss Earth: the climate. As Miss Earth national winner, I am an active ambassador for climate protection and many environmental projects. 	This year's edition of the annual Miss Earth pageant, which continues to push for environmental awareness, will once again be held in the Philippines, this time amid one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country. International contestants started to arrive in the Philippines on Wednesday, less than a month before the finals night on December 7 at Versailles Alabang in Las Piñas. Among the preliminary activities of the 90 candidates, pageant organizer Carousel Productions told ABS-CBN News, is taking part in relief operations for the survivors of super typhoon "Yolanda." A number of contestants assisted Thursday in repacking goods at the Quezon City headquarters of ABS-CBN's Sagip Kapamilya, which continues to send aid to devastated communities through its "Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na" initiative. "I can only hope that we can bring as much awareness to it as possible, worldwide, to bring support to the Philippines," Miss USA Nicolle Velez told ABS-CBN News. "The roads are closed," Miss Guam Katarina Martinez noted, "[so we] can't travel there and help and assist in the way that we want to, so we have to do more on our part." On its official Facebook page, Miss Earth Foundation said the pageant "more than ever, is not only timely but completely relevant," in light of the recent calamity. "Miss Earth will show to the world that beauty is not just an eye candy but a tool to help Mother Earth recover from disasters brought about by climate change," it said. The international pageant, whose slogan is "beauties for a cause," has been held in the Philippines annually since 2001, except in 2010 when Vietnam hosted the finals night. Carousel Productions earlier announced that the pageant, which will be broadcast in over 50 countries, would highlight eco-tourism "as its contribution to the [Philippines'] efforts to use tourism as a means to help alleviate poverty." The focus has since included the humanitarian crisis following typhoon Haiyan, with awareness about climate change and its effects put at the forefront. As of Thursday morning, the death toll due to Haiyan was at 2,357, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council. An estimated 11.3 million have been affected with 673,000 left homeless since the typhoon battered parts of Visayas on Friday. Set to crown her successor in December's pageant is Miss Earth 2012 Tereza Fajksova of Czech Republic, whose one-year reign had her travelling to several countries to promote the organization's environmental awareness and conservation campaigns. 	As Sobhita Dhulipala gets set for the Miss Earth 2013 pageant, she shares notes on her journey from a law student to a beauty queen. As far back as Sobhita Dhulipala can remember, being 'non-existent' didn't bother her. She says she was neither smart enough to be a front bencher, nor fun enough to be a backbencher and, she didn't have enough friends to be a middle bencher. This complex pushed her to achieve only academic excellence. But as fate predisposed, she participated in the Pond's Femina Miss India 2013 pageant, where she was crowned Miss India Earth 2013. She says, "I didn't expect to win. No one in my family is associated with this industry. I saw a hoarding in Hyderabad and took part. The next thing I know, I've been crowned a Miss India. I was glad I beat my own inferiority complex." Since then, she has spent every day preparing for the pageant in Philippines next month. As part of her eco beauty project, she highlighted the importance of safe drinking water. Under the 'Unilever Pureit Protecting lives' programme, in association with Integrated Village Development Programme (IVDP), the brand's key NGO partner in Krishnagiri (Tamil Nadu), Sobhita interacted with villagers about safe drinking water and installed water purifiers there. 	Cristina Martínez Murcia, Miss Earth Spain 2013, will compete in Manila on December 7th for the world title. The costumes of the Spanish candidate is designed by César Parla. Her outfits during her stay in the Philippines is from Valencian designer Eva Crespo. Her make up and skin care is provided by Boix Cosmetics de Valencia. Her bags are already prepared to go for the competition in Manila, Philippines, where at a time the country is recovering from one of the worst natural disasters in its history, with the intention to restore hope and normalcy to a society that depends mostly on eco-tourism. After winning the title of Miss Earth Spain 2013 in Alhambra, Granada, she faces the biggest challenge of her life; represent Spain in the international edition of the contest Miss Earth 2013 beauty contest that awards not only the most beautiful but also create awareness for the protection of nature. In addition to its environmental goals, the winner of Miss Earth is involved in international projects. During the month-long event, the organization carries the Miss Earth delegates selected destinations to display and promote these places to the international followers of the contest. Participants also take part in tree planting ceremonies, environmental and cultural programs. It is said that the winner is the most beautiful woman on Earth.
